Tutorial: Shooting depth video with Depthkit and view it on a Looking Glass with Depth Media Player

The world of 3D can feel like the wild west - there’s so much that you can do but... sometimes you don’t know where to start.

I’m here to help - specifically with 3D holographic content creation and display.

You can see some clips from a few of my holographic videos here (no glasses necessary).

This tutorial on using Scatter’s software Depthkit and Looking Glass Factory’s viewing tool Depth Media Player is for those that want to capture video content of the real world and view it holographically. Depthkit is a capture tool for those that have Realsense, Azure Kinect, or Kinect V2 cameras, and want to create volumetric stories, experiences, or capture life in 3D. Depth Media Player allows users to view hue encoded depth video, save them, and experience them in true 3D through the Looking Glass.

There’s something to be said about the impact of seeing video you captured in 3D. In traditional film and video, we’ve grown accustomed to the implied 3D world. With red and blue 3D glasses (and other stereoscopic film techniques), we glimpsed the futuristic idea of seeing narratives IRL as 3D stories, existing beside us in the Z space.

Depthkit and Depth Media Player combine to show us that this glimpse has become an eyes wide open reality.

Check out my tutorial on how you can capture video using depth cameras and display them holographically (in 3D) on a Looking Glass. Email us with questions, and send us what you make.

We'll be publishing more holographic video tutorials in the near future, so check back here soon.
